Portrait of Lieutenant General Jean-Baptiste Vaquette de Gribeauval, who rationalized and greatly improved the French system of artillery during the 18th century, with new types of artillery production methods and standardized types.

Although due credit for these victories must be given to the many marshals who commanded French corps – towering figures such as Louis-Nicolas Davout, Jean Lannes and Nicolas Soult – there is one man in particular who made France, for a time, the undisputed military superpower of Europe: Napoleon Buonaparte.

Born in Corsica in 1769, Napoleon undertook a military education in France, specializing in artillery, and distinguished himself to the new French regime by suppressing revolts on the streets of Paris in 1795, then through a series of lighting victories in Italy, as commander of the Army of Italy in 1796–7. His forward momentum continued when he subsequently led an expeditionary force against the British in Egypt, capturing Alexandria and Cairo in short order. Admiral Horatio Nelson’s victory over the French invasion fleet at Aboukir Bay, also known as the Battle of the Nile, in August 1798 trapped the French army in North Africa and limited the campaign. Napoleon, however, slipped back to France in August 1799, leading a coup d’état that brought him political power as First Consul. The subsequent military brilliance he demonstrated, plus his shrewd handling of France’s new politics, led to him being declared Consul for Life in 1802 then, in 1804, the Emperor of France. The country had gone effectively from being a republic to a dictatorship.
